Considering a career change in Canberra or a second income stream around your current job? Driving instruction could give you the opportunity to build your own business, have more choice over your working week and help people gain confidence and independence.

You don’t need a teaching background to explore this career. Patience, clear communication and a willingness to learn are a useful starting point.

At 121 Driver Training, we help you consider whether the career fits your goals, develop your instruction skills and understand the ACT licensing pathway. Our free, ongoing guidance continues beyond your course.

A career change or a second income stream: what could you earn?A second income, or a whole new career.

One-hour driving lessons in Canberra average around $95 (advertised driving school prices, October 2026). Using a rate of $95 as an example, you can explore what different teaching schedules could generate.

Are you looking to add income around your current job, or build towards driving instruction as your main career?

Second income

Start with 10 lesson hours a week

$950a week in lessons booked5 one-hour lessons on Saturday and 5 on Sunday

A weekend schedule could let you keep your current job while building your experience and student base.

Full-time career

Build towards 30 lesson hours a week

$2,850a week in lessons booked6 one-hour lessons a day, 5 days a week

If driving instruction is your main career goal, this example shows the lesson revenue a consistently booked schedule could generate.

Both examples use completed one-hour lessons at $95 each. They show gross lesson revenue before business expenses, rather than take-home pay. Actual earnings depend on your rate, completed bookings and working arrangement. Lesson hours exclude travel, breaks and administration.

You can plan a gradual transition. You might begin with weekend availability and expand as your student base grows. We help you explore your options during your free consultation.

Choose a practical service area in Canberra

You don’t need to offer lessons across the entire metropolitan area. Consider the suburbs you know, where you would collect students and the travel time between bookings.

You might focus on Canberra’s north or south, or a district such as Belconnen, Gungahlin, Woden or Tuggeranong. A defined service area can help you plan a workable schedule. If you plan to teach across the border in NSW, NSW licensing applies there, so tell us where you want to work and we can discuss your options.

Driving instructor career benefitsWhy become a driving instructor in Canberra?

A career should fit your goals as well as your skills. You might want greater independence, room for family commitments or work that lets you see the difference you make.

Driving instruction offers different ways to pursue those goals, from a part-time start to running your own driving school.

Be your own boss

If you choose to operate your own driving school, you can decide which suburbs to serve, set your lesson prices and choose the times you offer. Build a business around your goals.

You can also explore subcontracting or employment opportunities. We help you understand the differences so you can choose how you want to work.

Enjoy flexibility and work–life balance

Planning your availability can help you make room for family, personal commitments and life outside work. You might prefer weekday lessons, weekend lessons or a combination.

Your working arrangement and students’ availability will shape that flexibility. We help you think through a schedule that fits your circumstances.

Build an extra income stream

Once licensed, you could offer lessons around your existing job. A smaller schedule gives you time to gain experience and develop your student base gradually.

You can then decide whether driving instruction should remain a second income stream or become your main career.

Help people gain independence

Learning to drive can make it easier to reach work, education and everyday commitments. Your guidance helps learners develop confidence and safer habits on the road.

Seeing someone progress from a nervous beginner to a more capable driver can make your work feel purposeful and rewarding.

Would driving instruction suit you?You don’t need to be a teacher. You need to be patient.

Being a capable driver is a starting point. Teaching someone else also requires patience, attention and the ability to explain a task in different ways.

This career could suit you if you:

  • Enjoy working with people and helping them build confidence.
  • Stay calm when someone needs more practice.
  • Communicate clearly and are willing to develop teaching skills.
  • Take road safety seriously and remain attentive during lessons.
  • Want to explore your own business, a career change or additional income.

Before committing, check the ACT eligibility and licensing requirements. Our free consultation helps you understand the pathway and consider whether it fits your circumstances.
