Course Overview

Purpose & Recognition

This nationally recognised qualification equips you with the attitudes, skills and knowledge required to become a licensed car-driving instructor in any Australian state or territory. Although training and assessment are aligned with the organisational and legislative standards of Transport for NSW, all content has been carefully contextualised and customised to be applicable throughout Australia wherever necessary. The issued certificate is a nationally recognised qualification, valid across the country.

Course Duration

Maximum completion time: 6 months from the date of enrolment

Extensions are granted only in exceptional circumstances for a fee and must be requested and approved in writing.

Delivery Mode

The training is divided into two components:

1. Theory Component

The theory component comprises 12 self-study units, with each assignment typically requiring 8–12 hours to be completed. All manuals and assessment tasks are accessed and submitted via our secure Student Portal, so you can learn at your own pace and upload completed work whenever you’re ready. If you prefer printed resources, we can supply a hard-copy pack for an additional $200 to cover printing and postage. Once you’ve reviewed the materials and uploaded all assignments, the theory component is complete.

2. Practical Component

The practical component is delivered one-to-one at a location agreed between you and your accredited trainer. Standard fees in the attached Price List apply to all training conducted anywhere in New South Wales and in each state capital. If you request a regional location outside NSW, we can accommodate you, but a travel and accommodation surcharge will be added to the relevant capital-city course fee; this surcharge is quoted and approved before your booking is confirmed.

Practical training is competency-based, so the total trainer hours depend on the home practice and study you undertake. Most trainees require between twelve and fifteen hours with a trainer; the more practice you complete independently, the fewer trainer hours you will need, giving you flexibility while ensuring you still achieve the required standard.

Country NSW and interstate clients can receive the practical training in their location and are not required to travel to Sydney. We will send one of our trainers to your location to conduct the training. Course fee for country NSW and other states and territories is higher to cover the travel time and accommodation expenses incurred by the trainer. This allows you to study in your own home and train in the area where you will operate.

Training Plan & Support

121 Training tailors a training plan to meet your individual needs. If you experience difficulty with written work, your trainer can integrate theory tasks into practical sessions to keep you on track.

Assessment

1. Ongoing evidence collection – written assignments, projects, workplace logs and trainer observation.

2. Final on-road assessment (minimum 2 hours) at a designated location, covering:

Lesson presentation

Safe-driving demonstration and commentary driving

Completion of lesson records

Core manoeuvres and road-law application

If you are not yet competent on the first attempt, a second attempt is provided at no extra cost. All assessments are conducted in English and must meet regulatory standards.

Academic integrity is taken seriously. Suspected plagiarism or misconduct will be investigated; outcomes may include suspension or cancellation of enrolment, with a right of appeal as outlined in the Student Handbook.

Certification & Licensing

Upon successful completion of the course, you will be awarded the Certificate IV in Motor Vehicle Driver Training (Specialisation Group A – Car) (TLI41225).

In many Australian states and territories, this qualification is recognised by the relevant licensing authority and may be sufficient for the issue of a Driving Instructor Licence, without the need for additional competency assessment.

However, licensing requirements vary between jurisdictions. Some states and territories may require additional steps such as further assessments, checks, or application processes. You must confirm the current instructor licensing requirements with your state or territory regulator before enrolling in this course.

Effective Teaching Tips

Stay calm
If either you or your learner feels stressed, postpone the session. Too much stress during a driving lesson is not good. You’ll both perform better if you have a relaxed, friendly experience. If necessary, take over the driving task.

Plan
Plan driving sessions, from simpler driving to more demanding situations. Start on quiet streets and slowly progress to busier roads before attempting to drive at night and at higher speeds. Get your learner to work out a route they would like to travel.

Give instructions
Learners need clear instructions. Early directions give the learner time to think ahead and ask questions. Use the ‘At, When, Do’ method with your Learner (e.g. “At the next street, when there’s a safe gap, turn left”).

Total concentration
Turn your mobile, the radio or any music off, so your learner driver has your full attention.

Role model behaviour
It’s been shown that your driving habits and attitudes influence a learner’s driving behaviour before they begin learning to drive, so your focus and behaviour are crucial.
