Provisional License

On passing your practical driving test you will be issued with a provisional license. The provisional licence is issued in two stages, stage one (P1) and stage two (P2).

Provisional Licence (P1)

You will now be entitled to drive a vehicle without supervision.

The responsibility which comes with the added freedom to go where you want when you want is often to great for new dyoung drivers.

It is an unfortunate fact that you are at a much greater risk of being involved in a motor vehicle accident in your first years as a driver than at any other time.

In an effort to reduce the risk to young drivers the Queensland Transport Department require has introduced the following restrictions:

  • you must display your red "P" plates
  • you must hold your P1 license for a minimim of 12 months
  • you must have your license with you when you are driving
  • you may only have one passenger aged under 21 years of age (excluding immediate family members) with you in your vehicle between 11pm and 5am
  • you may not use your mobile phone (not even hands free or either Bluetooth
  • you must ensure your passengers do not use a mobile phone with the loud speaker function activated
  • you may not drive a high powered vehicle
  • you must have a zero blood alcohol concentration level whenever you are in control of a vehicle
  • you may only drive an automatic vehicle if you took your driving test in an automatic vehicle
  • you must not accumulate 4 or more demerit points in a 12 month period. To do so will result in a 3 month suspension or a Good driving Behaviour (GDB) for 1 year
  • you must be aware that you will receive a late night driving restriction if you accumulate 4 demerit points.

Provisional Licence (P2)

To qualify for the stage two provisional license you will be required to pass a hazard perception test. This test is designed to assertain if you have learned how to recognise and cope with the various hazards that exist in the normal driving envioroment.

Before you apply to take your hazard perception test it is advisable to have an independent assessment of your hazard perception in a variety of driving conditions by day and by night.

The more you study hazard recognition and hazard evasion the less contact you will have with insrance companies.

The One to One Driver Training Hazard Perception Assessment will be conducted in a variety of traffic conditions and will include a variety of different types of roads including country roads, dirt/gravel roads, and residential streets, on highways, toll ways and freeways, in multilevel car parks and through school zones.

In short the driver under assessment will be exposed to as many different hazards as possible within the three hour time frame.

Any lack of perception of hazards or lack of response to hazards will be highlighted and further training made available if required.

To progress to the second stage Provisional Driving Licence (P2) you must:

  • hold your P1 license for a minimum of 12 months
  • pass a hazard perception test
